Stuttering Scholarship Alliance (SSA)

SSA is a 501 (c)(3) international nonprofit organization that sponsors the speech therapy for persons who stutter from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. WE ALSO ENGAGE IN COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROJECTS THROUGH WORKSHOPS, CONFERENCES, AND SUPPORT GROUPS TO RAISE AWARENESS FOR STUTTERING IN LOCAL COMMUNITIES across the globe.

THE PROBLEM

ACCORDING TO THE U.S DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, THERE ARE 6 MILLION U.S. STUDENTS IN GRADES K-12 WITH SOME FORM OF DISABILITY, AND 20% OF THOSE STUDENTS SUFFER FROM A SPEECH IMPAIRMENT. TODAY, DISABILITIES IN SPEECH ARE OFTEN DIFFICULT TO TREAT EFFECTIVELY. SCHOOLS EQUIPPED WITH SPECIAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENTS OFTEN TIMES HAVE OVERBURDENED TEACHERS THAT ARE LIMITED IN HOW MUCH support THEY CAN provide to STUDENTS WITH SPEECH OR LANGUAGE IMPAIRMENTS. ADDITIONALLY, MANY FAMILIES CANNOT AFFORD SPEECH THERAPY OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL, WITH an AVERAGE COSt of ~$200 FOR AN EVALUATION AND ~$150 FOR AN ONE-HOUR SESSION. WITH MOST STUDENTS REQUIRING AT LEAST TWO CONSULTATIONS PER WEEK, FOCUSED THERAPY CAN COST AN UNPAYABLE AMOUNT - AT LEAST $300 A WEEK.

Mission statement

Stuttering Scholarship Alliance (SSA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a bridge to access for people who stutter—otherwise facing barriers of access—to achieve their fullest potential. We are committed to innovative solutions to provide more accessibility for people who stutter: including areas of (1) speech therapy, (2) education/advocacy, and (3) community.
